CGiii Comment

Linn da Quebrada describes herself as a 'gender terrorist' - yes, she - most definitely - likes to court controversy...as most 'performance artists' exhaustively do!

Gender has become one of the hottest of topics of modern times, with countless PhDs and [hack] psychologists proclaiming: Gender is not determined by your genitalia. If this is genuinely the case...then, why are trans*people totally obsessed with [their] genitalia?!?

Like Ms da Quebrada, we can be controversial too. Unlike Ms da Quebrada, we do not need to explicitly expose ourselves...as she does...too often and unnecessarily so! For no other reason other than...to shock!

Well, the only shocking thing about this documentary is...it has won quite a few notable awards!!! There's no structure to the film, there's certainly no artistry to it...one minute she's 'singing' cacophonously, the next, she's exposing herself...then, there are a few straight-to-camera pseudo-intellectual diatribes with a few other irrelevancies just to increase the runtime...it's all very aggressive, too antagonistic and monotonously uncomfortable.

The filmmakers missed an opportunity, giving [for what it seems] Ms da Quebrada overall control as to content...we never really see the real person...apart from when she talks about surviving cancer...at last, the person...but, it's all too fleeting and the performer takes over...just as loud, just as brash as before.

This film is for her established fanbase [she seems to be quite popular...within a certain demographic in Brazil]. As for new converts...well, let's just say, her appeal is limited to that certain demographic.

The(ir) Blurb...

The female trans*body becomes a political means of expression in both public and private space. The black, transgender singer Linn da Quebrada deconstructs how alpha males conceive of themselves. Kiko Goifman and Claudia Priscilla portray a charismatic artist who reflects on gender and has an extraordinary stage presence.
