CGiii Comment

A hatchet job, courtesy of the director...of mediocre success going to the head...was Miguel Piñero really this vile?

He wrote a play - Short Eyes - and, in truth it was nothing special. But, it did cause a few ripples.

The film they made of it was not particularly good.

In fact - he wasn't what you would call a great writer.

So...why make a lousy film about a lousy writer?

Unkind? Perhaps...but, this film is not exactly bestowing a humanitarian award upon his memory.

The(ir) Blurb...

"Piñero" tells the story of the explosive life of a Latino icon, the poet-playwright-actor Miguel Piñero, whose urban poetry is recognized as a pre-cursor to rap and hip-hop. After doing time in hard-core Sing-Sing for petty thefts and drug dealing, Piñero's prison experiences developed into the 1974 Tony-nominated play Short Eyes. The resulting notoriety and fame was too much for the Latino bad-boy genius who retreated to the darker corners of New York City.
