A seemingly chance encounter with an estranged childhood friend draws a bookstore clerk into a plot to steal a time machine. The summer after they graduated from high school, Zelda rebuffed Cassie's romantic advances and burned their friendship to the ground. Fifteen years later, a seemingly chance encounter with Cassie leads Zelda to think there is hope of rekindling their friendship. But things quickly take a turn when Cassie drags Zelda along to steal a strange object from the Church of Scientology. It turns out that Cassie has been hired by Dave, Zelda's obnoxious childhood nemesis.

Dave's grandfather Hyrum recently died and left Dave a notebook claiming Hyrum built a time machine in the 1960's, only to have it dismantled and stolen by the government. Cassie and Dave want Zelda to help them break into a government facility and steal it back. Yearning to reconnect with her friend and certain the whole thing is a farce, Zelda reluctantly agrees to help. But as she delves deeper into the mystery she uncovers secrets about her past that have dire implications for her future.
