Cooking Up Democracy

Country: Germany, Language: German, 87 mins

  • Director: Monika Treut

CGiii Comment

While democracies around the world are coming under pressure, Taiwan has proven remarkably resilient in the face of China’s authoritarianism. Led by former Digital Minister Audrey Tang, the film delves into a vibrant scene of activists, queer voices, and feminist thinkers who are shaping a pluralistic vision of democracy. Among them: Zo and Tiffany at their teahouse Grassland, Tong and his lesbian mother at the LGBTQ+ organization Hotline, Brian and Yo-Ling at Daybreak, and Yi-Chien and Shu-Wen, who are fighting for equality and marriage for all. Together, they show what holds Taiwan’s democracy together.
