Quite unlike any Christmas film you've seen before...and with a great big dollop of luck will never see again!
This is a horror...both in terms of subject matter and the film itself. That is until the penny drops...indeed, if the penny doesn't drop [for you], you will absolutely despise the grim, sacrificial Christmas offering.
The film has to be taken as a whole, rather than its subsequent parts. Mainly because...the first forty or so minutes are torture...an over-played lesbian, foul-mouthed kids and 'comedy' that falls flat on its deadpan face. This is the middle-class as you have never seen them before...this is the last of the middle-classes!
Is that a political/sociological statement?!? Well...the film, taken as a whole, certainly is! Camille Griffin does not hold back whatsoever! And neither does young Roman Griffin Davis, he gives the performance of the film, stealing every scene with ease. He also manages to switch the film from the torturous to the emotion...and, we're talking extreme emotion here, tears will flow...my son!
It really is a difficult and terrifyingly topical film. The impact it creates is immense, unthinkable, incomprehensible and not so far from an inevitable...or, from the truth.
Take it as a whole, go in knowing nothing...your tear stained eyes will be prised open and you will feel as if you have been punched in the stomach!
