CGiii Comment

Best foreign language film in the 1982 Oscars...

Based on the real-life Gustav Grundens, a homosexual actor who was adored by Goering.

The homosexuality is practically ignored in this Faustian film...but, it is there - if you can read between the lines.

Brandauer delivers a majestic performance - keeping the interest focused on his character - the director does deserve the same amount of praise.

Truly...a great film.

The(ir) Blurb...

A German stage actor finds unexpected success and mixed blessings in the popularity of his performance in a Faustian play as the Nazis take power in pre-WWII Germany. As his associates and friends flee or are ground under by the Nazi terror, the popularity of his character supercedes his own existence until he finds that his best performance is keeping up appearances for his Nazi patrons.
