The bourgeoisie gets a roasting in this ultra-stylish, emotionally opulent drama.

Character driven - Swinton will seduce you with her muted chilliness.

The score will raise you up and drop you just as quickly.

The other characters will annoy you - for their grievances are petty - the wealthy have problems but they are very different from those of the working classes.

Sympathy and empathy are difficult.

It's a theme-park for poor voyeurs.

Deeply touching - scathingly stylish.

Bravo.

Over two decades ago, Emma left Russia to follow Tancredi Recchi, the man who had proposed to her. Now a member of a powerful industrial Milanese family, she is the respected mother of three.
