CGiii Comment

A gay opera...! What could be gayer?!? Well, not this.

Let us not beat around the bush...this is utterly atrocious...insultingly so.

The staging is sparse and unimaginative.

The libretto - by Proulx, her first (and, hopefully, last) - is a little perplexing...in that she has no talent for libretto-writing...and, why the additives?!?

But, it's Charles Wuorinen's music that really makes this a miserable experience...there's nothing tuneful, melodious or bearable in the whole 120 agonising, atonal minutes.

And, when dead Jack's shirt goes flying off up towards the heavens at the end...a laughable gasp...of incredulity...what a farce.

...That was not applause, that was the sound of ear-plugs being removed en masse.

Excruciating.
