Journey for Understanding: Gays and Lesbians in the Church (A)

"'Journey' is a documentary that takes an objective look at the conflicts and dilemmas of the Gay and Lesbian Catholic Community and the Church to which they belong. The program clears up misconceptions about official church teaching and listens to Gay and Lesbian concerns about their life within a Church that often is unaccepting. This program was made with the cooperation of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Catholic Gay Community to avoid misrepresentation and confrontation that so often is seen in media. There are interviews as diverse as Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles and Jim Fouratt, co-founder of ACT UP."The program is designed for a wide spectrum audience. It is meant to inform and educate not only conservative fundamentalists but also those in the gay community who are affected and often alienated. The intent of the program was to bring about dialogue and understanding within the Church and in the community at large. "This program was funded independently with great pains taken to remain objective and not create a confrontational battle ground that often plagues projects with sensitive issues such as this. I believe this program tells truths in the form of church teaching, lived experience, and personal opinion.
