CGiii Comment

Franz Kafka’s life and legacy are brought playfully to life in Czech director Agnieszka Holland’s energetic biopic, with Idan Weiss perfectly cast as the iconic writer. Moving backwards and forwards in time from his childhood with an overbearing father (Peter Kurth) to his creation of classics including The Trial and Metamorphosis, and his complicated love life that often worked better on paper than in person, Holland’s unorthodox approach immerses us in Kafka’s emotions as well as his creations. The kaleidoscopic result allows each facet of Kafka’s life to shine while also considering our, often surreal, treatment of his literary legacy.
