This caused quite a furore in Brazil...

It all depends on your point-of-view...most [bible-bashers] will find it [deeply] blasphemous, others [a handful] will find it funny...but, the vast majority will be left with their jaws hanging loosely from their faces. Because!?! It's unadulterated and undiluted garbage.

Seemingly, there's a 1.4 million-strong petition petitioning Netflix to ban/remove/incinerate this bawdy tale...definitely, a bit of an over-reaction, especially in a country where people's 'freedoms' are being eroded by the [non-secular] Bolsonaro regime.

So...if The First Temptation of Christ is viewed as a political statement, it delivers a powerful statement against the catholic, thrice-married Bolsonaro. Once upon a time, Henry VIII wanted a divorce...so, he chopped off heads. Bolsonaro was not so extreme, he threw himself into the Jordan river and emerged as an evangelical!

Bolsonaro once said: "I would be incapable of loving a gay son", and added that he would prefer any gay son of his "to die in an accident". He has 'mellowed' since saying that...but, hey, politicians do and say anything that wins them more votes.

This film is as irreverent as Bolsanaro...it's just a pity that it wasn't a better film. If it had been better...then, it would have been one mightily powerful - anti-establishment - statement. But...whatever you may think of it...artistic freedoms have to be promoted, protected and preserved.
