Difficult Love

Country: South Africa, Language: English, 45 mins

  • Director: Peter Goldsmid; Zanele Muholi

CGiii Comment

An intimate portrait of the sometimes infamous lesbian photographer, Zanele Muholi, an unapologetic chronicler of her community, amongst the most hidden and threatened in our country. Muholi is disarming and very articulate about the purpose of her work. ‘Difficult Love’ (commissioned by the SABC and codirected by Peter Goldsmid and Zanele Muholi) is a fine documentary. It is an unapologetic film, which takes you into Zanele’s world. We learn about her background, her passion, we see her at work and at home with her girlfriend, and we get to hear what South African gender theorists and Art critics think about her controversial art works.
