CGiii Comment

What can we say about Maud? Well...for starters, she ain't no saint!

She's either a messed up young woman with severe mental health issues...or, just plain and simple, bigoted, self-righteous, religious nutcase drunk on delusion! Take your pick...neither one is pretty! She will either invoke pity and empathy...or, instill a burning desire to wallop her with the nearest-to-hand bible.

She's a psychotic, bible-bashing nurse who is charged with the care of a terminal, ex-dancing, alcohol-friendly lesbian...and, thankfully, it is nowhere near to being as predictable as you may - initially - think!

Rose Glass, director and writer, takes no prisoners with her debut feature. This is a different kind of horror, more psychological...with great big gothic daubs plastered all over the place...rather appropriate, since it was filmed in Dracula's birthplace: Scarborough!

The two things that do get an absolute hammering are...religion and men [really, all the male characters are beyond awful]...but, that's male-led religion for you...and, elicits the question: What would religion be like if it was women-led? Well, if this is anything to go by...even more terrifying than it actually is...this is the true horror in [and of] Saint Maud...RELIGION!

What a debut...what a statement!
