Juliet, a beautiful but straight-laced psychologist, is forced to return to her small hometown after her girlfriend, Lydia, discovers a wedding invitation. As soon as they arrive in Port Fairy Lydia, a carefree artist, realises Juliet wants nothing more than to keep her past hidden. This proves difficult for Juliet when her father's chief political rival starts questioning his death. Following a ghostly dream, Lydia demands answers but Juliet runs physically and emotionally. Soon she is trying to keep face, deflect questions of her past and keep Lydia at arms-length. Ultimately Juliet has to decide if keeping her past sadness buried is worth risking any chance at future happiness.
