Chieri Furuhata has never felt romantic attraction toward anyone, nor has she ever experienced love. Because of that, she has always felt somewhat isolated — a little out of place wherever she goes. Romance movies don’t move her, she can’t reciprocate the affection of a close male friend, and even her friendships often start to falter. One day, Chieri meets Shoya — a man who, like her, doesn’t experience romantic feelings. They instantly connect, delighted to find someone who finally understands: “We’re not alone.” Yet, despite how similar they seem, there’s one crucial difference between them — sexual desire. While Chieri, who is asexual, feels neither romantic nor sexual attraction toward others, Shoya, who is aromantic, still experiences sexual desire. As Shoya’s physical longing grows, and Chieri finds herself unable to respond, their once-perfect bond begins to unravel.
