In the late 1940s, George Orwell, increasingly ill with tuberculosis, was living on Jura while working on 1984. His seminal novel paints a dystopian portrait of a man’s secret rebellion against a totalitarian surveillance society. Raoul Peck’s ambitious and wide-ranging documentary weaves an exploration of the book’s ideas with Orwell’s biography, including his childhood in India and involvement in the Spanish Civil War, both of which informed his work. A wealth of archive footage, including clips from adaptations of the novel, highlights how concepts such as doublethink, Big Brother, and newspeak resonate more than ever today.
