Black Carnations and Baltic Queer History at CFF
Inspired by the exhibition Black Carnation by Konstantin Zhukov at the Centre for Photography (CFF), Cinema Queer presents an evening dedicated to Baltic queerness. In his artistic practice, Zhukov explores Latvia’s queer history, focusing on the Soviet era and the period immediately following the country’s liberation. With Black Carnation, he further develops this interest through new works. The evening features a specially curated program of Baltic video art in the CFF garden, alongside a performative reading with Konstantin Zhukov.
About *Black Carnation: Case Study No. 2
Black Carnation: Case Study No. 2 continues the artist’s exploration of queer history in his native Latvia. This iteration examines oral histories regarding the first gay parties organized in the early 1990s, shortly after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union. These experiences bear witness to a broader process of liberation and freedom within a Baltic context—a narrative that is often overlooked yet holds crucial significance.

Episode 1: Fuck The Fascism
Valentina del Pantéon and Jorge Benavides / 2016 / 8,29 min
Fuck the Fascism reveals the true story behind monuments that glorify genocide, tyranny and slavery; to raise public awareness of the national heroes we celebrate, the men who name our streets and bequeathed vast fortunes created through robbery, assault and blood. This political documentary porn short film is an open invitation to anyone who wants to participate and contribute to this porno-vandalic collective project. Monsters, mutants, queers, sudakas, migrants, dissidents; those who wake up and want to wake others up. We break down walls imposed by (un)knowledge; we fuck the robbers of fascist dignitaries, the heroes of colonialism. At the crime scene, we ejaculate real history on their stone bodies.
Episode 2: Fuck the Fascism in Rome
Valentina del Pantéon and Jorge Benavides / 2017 / 11,50 min
This is the second episode of the political porn documentary film project Fuck the Fascism. It was written, shot and edited in just four days during the Hacker Porn Film Festival in Rome.
Episode 3: Fuck the Fascism in Paris
Valentina del Pantéon and Jorge Benavides / 2018 / 16 min
The third episode was filmed in Paris during the Porn Yourself Festival 2017. Paris; the city of love. Obscene colonialism and statues with the biggest testicles we’ve ever seen. We rubbed and fingered history’s holiest monuments, causing John Paul II to burn a little earlier than Notre Dame. As if the Eiffel Tower were a dildo, we introduced ourselves to France’s fetid colonial history and its fascination with anthropozoological exhibits.
Episode 4: The Crossroad of Two Worlds
Valentina del Pantéon and Jorge Benavides / 2019 / 9,35 min
In Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Selk’nam descendant Marcos García tells the horrific story of the ethnocide of the Fuegian people. His testimony makes us aware of how this history repeats itself; how the precursors of these massacres and their heirs – now powerful businessmen and politicians – are still responsible for appropriation and violent repression of communities. Formerly it was the mutilation of Selk’nam ears; now, in the midst of the Chilean social uprising, it is the eyes of the mestizos that are being shot by the police. MariaBasura and other activists decide to take revenge, which leads them to a small town in Asturias, Spain, the birthplace of Jose Menendez Menendez, one of the forefathers of the genocide.
Episode 5: Post pandemic war-ra edition
Valentina del Pantéon and Jorge Benavides / 2022 / 7,06 min
After a long period of enforced inactivity, Fuck the Fascism returns to the streets of Berlin. Not only are they horny for fucking monuments, they are also angry and eager to share information about war during pandemic times. This is a call to disobedience.

Susana
Susana Blaustein Muñoz / Argentina / 1980 / 25 min
An experimental autobiographical portrait; like a diary in moving images. Susana leaves her homeland in Argentina to live her life free from the cultural pressure and family structures. In those 23 minutes, she confronts her entire family—but especially her sister—about her life as a lesbian, interspersed with images from her personal archive and interviews with her friends and lovers. This is a politically significant film, as it is the one that explicitly mentions lesbianism in Argentine cinema for the first time.
Old Love Dies Hard
Susana Blaustein Muñoz / Argentina / 2013 / 8 min
Many years later, this is another biographical short film from Susana Blaustein that tells her story with Christina and takes us from Stockholm to Buenos Aires. Private House
Gloria Camiruaga / Chile / 1990 / 9 min
A portrait of travesti marginality crossed and altered by Christian signs in the daily metaphor, acquiring a meaning that mixes the pagan and the divine. This video was censored in Chile by the Cinematographic Qualification Commission. As a result of this, the artists Pedro Lemebel and Francisco Casas, known as ”Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis”, carried out a famous protest performance, in solidarity with Gloria Camiruaga.
Red Was The Colour Of Their Lips
Henrique Magalhães / Brazil / 1983 / 15 min
At a Carnival camp, two boys meet and get involved. This independent production portrays discrimination among homosexuals themselves and stereotypes often attached to gay men. One of them catches the other dressed as a woman. A disagreement ensues. The film was scanned by CineLimite from the original Super 8 camera element, which had been preserved by director Henrique Magalhães.
Helô E Dirce – Mangú Bangue
Luiz Otávio Pimentel / Brazil / 1972 / 18.27 min
On the street, two boys meet. The film moves towards homoerotic suggestions of delicacy and violence, accompanied by a fast camera. Performances, soundtrack, graphic elements and posters make up the narrative. This film is considered a lost film. The restoration was carried out from the last known surviving element, a VHS copy. Through a careful digital restoration, CineLimite was able to recover a significant amount of image detail and reconstruct the film’s original color as faithfully as possible.
