Goat (The)

Country: South Africa, Language: English, 12 mins

Original Title

iBhokhwe
  • Director: John Trengove
  • Writer: John Trengove
  • Producer: Elias Ribeiro

CGiii Comment

An atmospheric film that highlights the barbarity and senselessness of ritual and circumcision.

A tripod would have helped...but, the last scene kills the film stone dead. What a ridiculous ending!

This is exactly why a short film is important...John Trengove continued with this project and eventually produced an astounding feature: The Wound.

A teenage Xhosa initiate recuperates in a mountain hut after a ritual circumcision. News arrives that his elders won't be coming to care for him, but no reason is given. With nothing but his growing pain and his young brother for company, the initiate's panic turns to desperation.
