Haunted by the killing of his Palestinian childhood friend Aseel Asleh by Israeli police in 2000, Arab-Jewish, queer filmmaker and activist against the occupation Roy Cohen revisits their friendship through a cinematic letter addressed to Aseel. The two met as teenagers at a peace camp in Maine, sharing political ideals and a vision of coexistence. Far from Maine moves between archival material, memories of the camp, and present-day encounters with friends, thinkers and fellow activists, creating a dialogue across time that links personal grief to collective violence. A European co-production between six countries, the film didn't seek any Israeli public or private funding. Produced by Serge Gordey (Five Broken Cameras), it is an intimate, politically grounded exploration of friendship, memory, and moral responsibility in the face of ongoing injustice.
