CGiii Comment

Hold onto your horses...the erstwhile 'quirky' Almodóvar has hung up his reins.

Julieta is all about emotion. This is a finely crafted essay about love and loss...what you don't know can't hurt you...well, Almodóvar turns that one on its head...what Julieta doesn't know is slowly and indiscriminately eating away at her very core.

This is a conservative Almodóvar...edifying the still waters that run deep...because Julieta is calm and reflective. Flashbacks bring this spirited young woman back to life...for those of a certain age the resonance is - quite simply - breath-taking.

In the mirror, you may look older...but, inside you are still the same as you were when life was beautiful. And then, that life throws - at will - what it will...and, as it sticks that once-beautiful reflection starts to dissolve. That's life, that's Julieta!

This is a mature Almodóvar...this is a mature production that carefully unravels the mystery of a missing daughter and - at the same time - paints a remarkable portrait of a woman as she was and as she is...

Quiet and quite, quite beautiful.
