CGiii Comment

Intense...to say the least.

Prison dramas usually follow a set route of events...thankfully, this is a little different.

There is no overt homosexuality...although the homophobia is loud and clear.

This is about the under-stated, unrequited relationship between Rune and Rashid...they are friends, they are business partners...they are everything that the subtext dictates.

It's not difficult to paint a harsh canvas when it comes to prison...but, this is washed-out in colour and warmth...here, you do whatever it takes to survive...even then, there are no guarantees.

With strong performances...this is up there with the best [grittier] prison dramas.

The(ir) Blurb...

The R of the title stands for the young protagonist, Rune, fearlessly played by Pilou Asbæk. Imprisoned for violent assault, he's a cocky, good-looking young man placed in the hardcore ward, where his survival depends on quickly learning the prison's parallel world of rules, honor, and obligations. R also stands for Rachid, a young Muslim prisoner who becomes Rune's friend and accomplice, defying the rigid racial stratifications among the inmates.
